E-Cigarette Legislation Update

The proposed HB 4997and SB 667-668 has passed and is awaiting the Governor’s signature. The bills define e-cigarettes as "vapor products" rather than "tobacco products" which allows for special treatment for e-cigarettes, avoiding the regulations that apply to other tobacco products and creating the illusion that these products are safe and should be treated differently without the scientific evidence to back up such claims.

On April 24th, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released the proposed rule exerting its authority to regulate additional tobacco products. This recent action by FDA regulates e-cigarettes as tobacco products by prohibiting sales of these products to those under 18 and requiring manufacturers to disclosure their ingredients to the FDA. Advocates would like the Michigan bill to mimic the FDA proposal. To make your voice heard, contact the Governor using the American Cancer Society Action Alert.
