Since 1981 BBFA has worked to strengthen awareness in the community of the harmful effects of adolescent substance abuse and has provided drug prevention education and parenting skills classes to area parents. You may have heard that we have have a new name - that is true! While we are still "BBFA", those letters now stand for "Building Better Families Through Action". Our new name reflects the fact we believe that parents need to take an active role in parenting in order to strengthen the family unit. In addition, we wanted everyone to know that our programming is open to everyone in the metro Detroit area.
It is BBFA's belief that young people have the right to achieve their greatest potential without the damaging influence of alcohol and other drugs. Parents are the primary source of prevention in their children's lives and families must have the active support of all the community systems working together to help keep youth drug free. Young people deserve the support of a society that reinforces healthy living.
BBFA's goal is to educate parents, students and other members of the community about the consequences of the use of alcohol and other drugs and to promote community attitudes and practices that discourage the use of these substances by children. BBFA works to accomplish this goal through parent networking and education. It also serves as a community resource and cooperates with other prevention-oriented community organizations.
A volunteer Board of Directors runs BBFA. Its directors network with other prevention groups and attend conferences to be educated on current issues. BBFA's Advisory Board is comprised of community leaders and prevention and treatment experts. We are the oldest Families in Action (now Families Through Action) group in the state of Michigan and are supported solely by private contributions and membership dues.
